Independence Day, Araw ng Kasarinlán or Araw ng Kalayaan is celebrated with great pride by all Filipinos all walks of life. ” Day of Freedom” is an annual national holiday in the Philippines observed on June 12, of Spain in 1898.
Col. E. De Leon Elementary School enjoined the 123rd Celebration of Independence Day with the theme, “Diwa ng Kalayaan sa Pagkakaisa at Paghilom ng Bayan”. Teachers and other members of the school community showed their unity in commemorating the event by doing a simple yet meaningful celebration which was opened with a flag raising ceremony followed by an inspirational message from our Principal Dr. Susan J. Corro where she stressed that independence doesn’t only mean freedom from colonization of other countries but also freeing ourselves from negativity that weighs us down. On the other hand, DepEd Secretary Leonor M. Briones in her message left a question “So what does independence mean to us? Independence means holidays? Independence means dressing up and singing? But independence is not only as I said, the grant of political independence – so, what does the essence of independence at this time truly meant?” she asked. This is a very timely question to ponder upon especially now in this time of pandemic. It is up to us to define what is really the true meaning of independence.
